Tony Stewart found the way to the victory, it did and it with a single hand.
With the fourth lost march and the third next one to be united, Stewart fixed them to take to its Chevrolet Montecar it to the first victory of the season. Stewart had to maintain with a hand the gearshift (the marches skipped single), and with the other to lead. Thus and everything managed to escape to Ricky Rudd and to remain with the triumph.
Stewart, champion of the series in 2002, took the advantage in the mixed track from Infineon Raceway when the author of pole and favorite of the race Jeff Gordon underwent his own problem of transmission. This was the first victory of Stewart from August last in the track of Watkins Glen International, the other mixed circuit that visits the Nextel Glass.
“It maintained the handle with a hand, and with the other I lead in the final returns”, said Stewart smiling abiertamente. “He was very hard, mainly when it tried to happen to Ricky Rudd.”
Several cars, among them the lead ones by the veterans Rusty Wallace and Rudd, remained in the track when Stewart made its final shutdown in seventh of eight precautions of the race. Stewart reincorporated 14º in turn 73, of a total of 110 returns.
In the turn 85 Stewart already one was in the second place, to 2,7 seconds of the Ford of Rudd.
To reach it was only a time question. Stewart escaped to Rudd with an inner movement in the last bracket when still they reduced 10 returns more.
Rudd was able to reach again to the leader when the precaution flag was shaken in return 103. But Stewart far shot when the green one flamed to win with 2,2 seconds of advantage, approximately 20 cars of difference.
The champion of the series Kurt Busch crossed the goal third party whereas Wallace finished quarter, followed of Dale Jarrett and Elliott Sadler.
The victory of Stewart was 20º of its file, his fourth in mixed tracks and their second on the colorful automobile race track of 1,99 miles. This circuit will welcome in the IndyCar series in the month of August.
“We made a strategy really wonderful and we obtained a good position in the track”, said Rudd. “But we waited for more precautions. It is why I remained without fuel going upon the hill after the picture flag.”
As far as chances to return to escape to Stewart, Rudd emphasized: “I knew that Tony was faster”, Ricky said. “I only tried to maintain it of the best way but obvious, we were not able to do it.”
The transmission problems spoiled the day for three of the four pilots of Hendrick Motorsports. Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch had to reduce the march by transmission problems.
It is why 14º place of Greg Biffle allowed him to reach the leadership of the contest. Biffle now surpasses Johnson by 22 points.
Gordon, the undisputed leader in this type of tracks with eight victories, was the favorite to remain with his fifth triumph in Infineon, but suddenly Gordon raised the march when its transmission failed. In the end 32º finished.
