Nascar
5 of May
Tony Stewart was able to stay besides the numerous incidents in track, to adjudge the victory in the Pontiac Excitement 400, disputed in the oval of Richmond International Raceway.
The race had begun Saturday at night, but in 66ª of the 400 returns rain forced to suspend it. Consequently, the competition started again Sunday as of the noon.
For Stewart, this result meant his third victory in this circuit. The American leading a Pontiac Firebird, surpassed to the rookie Ryan Newman when they reduced 28 returns to conclude the test. Stewart and Newman, this last one on board a Ford Taurus, battled car car during several returns. When it reduced 22 turns, Dave Blaney caused 14ª yellow flag after breaking the motor of its car. When the race was reinitiated, Stewart did not give options and I know escaped for a safe triumph.
With this brilliant result, Stewart ascends to 8º put of the Championship of pilots with 1394 points. Concluded the competition, the pilot commented: “All the boys of the equipment have carried out a fantastic work. To be totally honest, he was not in agreement with the car yesterday, but today we progressed much, and the effort done by all was worth the pain”, said Stewart.
The 400 returns to the oval of Richmond were victims enough. The pilots journeyed 103 returns under yellow flag. Several conductors blamed to the slippery surface of the circuit of so many accidents, among them: Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte and Ricky Rudd.
“We have never had problems with this track until today”, commented Ricky Rudd, that led almost 90 returns. “It has been an excellent track for a long time, but this clear one that the treatment applied to the surface has not been the correct one”, ended up saying Rudd, that took its “wrinkled” Taurus completely.
Undisputedly she was Ward Burton who throughout had the most competitive car the weekend. Burton led 125 returns, but it had to desert in turn 230 when it broke the transmission of its Dodge Intrepid. In spite of everything, its equipment repaired to the gear box, losing 36 returns, but managing to recompose the car and to arrive at the picture flag in 30º put. “It is a true pain which happened. It counted on a very competitive car and was hopeful to add good points, but the transmission us complicó definitively”, commented a downcast Burton.
Behind the Pontiac de Stewart, three were located Ford Taurus. Ryan Newman finished 2º, whereas Jeff Burton and Mark Martin, both teammates, seconded to the Ford of Newman. Martin, pilot veteran of Nascar, continues adding important points for the Championship, being located 4º.
Who also continues accumulating points, although without being protagonist, it is Sterling Marlin. The leader of the Championship maintains the difference and continues demonstrating an admirable regularity on his Dodge Intrepid. Mark that many considered that it could not to battle by title 2002 of Nascar.
On the other hand, the defending Champion Jeff Gordon concluded 7º with his Chevrolet Montecar it. Until the moment, Gordon and Jimmie Johnson they are the unique pilots of the mark able to fight by Championship 2002. Gordon is 6º with 1429, whereas it seconds it to Johnson with 1422.
The next date Saturday 18 of May will be realized, at night, in the oval of Lowe's.
