Swedish pilot Kenny Bräck of the Target equipment Ganassi Chip, gained east Sunday the Great Giant Telmex Prize/presented/displayed by Banamex/Visa, disputed in the Automobile race track Brother Rodriguez in the City of Mexico. The race was the last one of championship CART Fedex in season 2002.
To the controls of the Target Toyota Lola/Bridgestone, Bräck crossed the line of goal 3,987 seconds in front of recently crowned champion of the series, the Brazilian Christian gives Matta in the Havoline Toyota/Lola/Bridgestone. Dark brown Junqueira (Target Toyota/Lola/Bridgestone), the pilot who had marked pole position of this competition, finished third and with the gained points this weekend obtained the subchampionship of the series.
Bräck, happened to the front of the race after an excellent shutdown in pits in return 53, during a yellow flag caused by an accident of the American Michael Andretti (Team Motorola). The Swedish runner marched fifth until that moment and when returning to the track he was second, after the local hero, the Mexican Michel Jourdain Jr (#9 Giant Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone). Nevertheless, in the turn 62 Jourdain Jr it had to enter to pits and it lost the possibility of gaining the race that was disputed for the first time in City of Mexico in little more than 20 years.
This was the first victory of the season for Kenny Bräck and is in addition its first triumph in a mixed circuit.
It gives Matta, that classified 12º, had tied the record of more victories in one season of CART (8) of to have raised with the winner trophy.
“ Was a race in which I had to handle more fort than in no other of the season. We really did not have a car able to finish secondly but it is there where the work enters equipment in Newman-Haas. Some times the car is not so good or the motor or the shutdowns in pits or the pilot, but the other areas compensate the weakness. Junqueira, that was quickest in both sessions of classification – Friday and Saturday, did not lead any return in the race, although in the end, finishing to a position in front of Canadian Patrick Carpentier – his rival in the fight by the subchampionship could remain with the second place in the general score and with means million dollars.
The race of Junqueira had a duro beginning when doing contact with the car of Tony Kanaan in the first return. Junqueira fell then to the ninth square and passed the rest of the competition trying to recover positions.
“ The one of today was a hard race. But in the end, I feel like contentment to have finished in the second place of the championship. I had a good car all the weekend. Kanaan was the leader in the first 40 returns leading its Pioneer/WorldCom Honda/Lola/Bridgestone and for this reason, it gained an additional point. The car of Kanaan left pits, disconnecting the hose violently, generating fire in the area and minor wounds to three members of his escudería.
Of the Mexican runners participating in the race Michel Jourdain Jr he was the unique one that could finish. Their compatriots Luis Diaz – leading by Adrián Fernandez in the car #51 Tecate/Quaker State/Telmex Honda/Lola/Bridgestone- and Mario Domínguez (#55 Herdez Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) left the race by different problems in their cars.
