Formula 1
24 of January
After a difficult season 2005 and with the hope to return to the peak, escudería Ferrari presented/displayed its new single-seater, the “248 F1”, to compete in season 2006 of Formula 1.
During the act realized in Mugello they were present both pilots of the equipment, the German Michael Schumacher and the Brazilian Felipe Massa, besides the president of the equipment, Luca I gave Montezemolo.
Finishing with the tradition of last the five years, Ferrari has baptized its new single-seater for season 2006 with the name of “248 F1”. One named thus to the new car by the type of motor that will use, same that has capacity of 2,4 liters (24) and the eight cylinders (8), characteristics that in force enter this season due to the new regulation.
“Seeing this new car”, it began saying Todt, “With new logos of the sponsors and mainly with numbers 5 and 6 in the chassis, all this seems a return to a already distant past. It will be a great incentive to try to improve. The whole square wants to return high at the most.”
“It is a totally new project”, began saying Paolo Martinelli, Director of motor of F1. “It is a return to the past, as it also indicates the name of the car. We begin to work in this motor in the middle of the 2004 and soon it happened to the proving stand. In August of the past year it made its first test in Fiorano and in autumn of the 2005 we completed the V8. Now we are near the definitive version. Obvious, throughout the season we will have to continue improving it and describing an improvement curve.”
Martinelli emphasized the success of the work of Gilles Simon: “The calculations were made a long time ago enough, and although the variations in the regulation arrived at last hour, the fundamental modifications as the election of the center of gravity already had been taken.”
“The norms restrict much to us, but also they give an ample margin us for the experimentation”, continued Martinelli. “The angle of 90° was our election because it places the minimum weight for the components that do not have movement.”
“In ten years a norm is introduced For the first time to restrain the yield and that is fundamental. This change of power has forced to realize a great investment, but in the long term he will be economic. The general production of the motor continues being the same.”
Martinelli also has commented that has existed a dialog flowed between the engineers who work with the highway cars and those does that it with the models of competition. “We have known some engineers who work with the GT and have interchanged opinions as much at the time of analyzing the problems as at the time of solving them.”
“Certainly we shared a same field of work”, added Simon. “Nevertheless, there are many differences, for example in the terms and deliveries.”
Later the turn arrived from Aldo Coast, creator of the 248 F1, that commented the characteristics of the car: “Due to the obligatory introduction of the V8 motor we chose to as much impose a radical change in the mechanical aspect as in the aerodynamic one. In this last field we are still in a preliminary phase and will continue working until the first race of the season.”
“As far as the chassis, everything is totally new, mainly the central part. We decided it thus to optimize the distribution of the weight and to lighten all the structure. The same happens to the suspension, that especially has been redesigned as for the back part. The transmission also is all new one, as well as the differential. In the construction of these two new elements in particular we had to pay a very special attention to the characteristics of the V8. The majors vibrations generated by the motor caused more problems.”
Before the questions of the numerous journalists, Ross Brawn commented: “From mid the past season, when it was clear that we could not fight by the privilege positions, we began to concentrate itself more in the development, especially in the aerodynamic configuration and the characteristics of the new V8 motor. In spite of the progresses that the Bridgestone tires have experimented with the reintroduction of the changes of tires, in principle the times by return would have to be a second or two over those of the past year.”
“Everybody knows that the past year was very complicated for the equipment in the aspect of the tires, but the change in the regulation will help us”, commented the Brazilian Felipe Massa, east substitute year of Rubens Barrichello. “There have been many norms in the last no years that have favored to Ferrari, but this one yes does.”
On the other hand, Marc Gené has rolled already today in the Circuit de Catalonia with a F2004 with V8 motor. The Catalan pilot has completed a total of 88 returns and has obtained a better registry of 1:16.581 s. Felipe Massa will stand out tomorrow to Gené in Barcelona to the controls of the F2004, whereas Michael Schumacher has completed 44 returns in Mugello and has marked a better registry of 1:21.904 s with the flaming model presented/displayed nowadays.
